Prospective Interior Design Students

If you are planning to attend a school that offers a degree in Interior Architecture, it is important to understand that you will not be permitted to refer to yourself as an “Interior Architect,” even after completing a Master’s Degree. The titles “Architect,” “Architectural,” and “Architecture” are legally protected and restricted for use exclusively by individuals who are licensed architects. Using these terms without proper licensure is a violation of state law.

Furthermore, earning a degree in Interior Architecture does not qualify you to pursue licensure as an architect. The curriculum associated with such degrees typically does not meet the educational requirements necessary to sit for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), which is a key component of the licensure process.

It is strongly recommended that you take the time to thoroughly research and understand the legal and professional distinctions between interior design, interior architecture, and architecture. Doing so will help ensure that you make informed decisions about your education and career path.
