Path 1 to Become a Certified Interior Designer

Path 1 is for students and designers who currently qualify to take the
IDEX California
® only.

You are a student with 2 years
of education (min. 40 interior design semester units)

or

You are an interior designer with more than 5  but less than 8 years of work experience.

Under Path #1 you are Eligible to only take the IDEX® California,the required exam, and apply for certification.

After that, you will still need to meet one of the four categories A, B, C, or D (shown below) to become a Certified Interior Designer.

It includes Eligibility to take the IDEX California
® .

Pay fees online for Path #1

Fill in and sign CCIDC Code of Ethics
(must be mailed in).


CATEGORIES OF CERTIFICATION

All Certified Interior Designers must meet an education, work experience and examination requirement following Path #1 or 2
and under one of the four categories:


Category A

  1. Have a minimum of 80 Core Units from – (the equivalent of a completed four or five-year degree/certificate) accredited interior design degree program;
  2. Two years of diversified interior design experience;
  3. Provide evidence of passage of IDEX California®, the required exam.

Category B

  1. Have a minimum of 60 Core Units from – (the equivalent of a completed three-year degree/certificate) accredited interior design certificate program;
  2. Three years of diversified interior design experience;
  3. Provide evidence of passage of IDEX California®, the required exam.  

Category C

  1. A minimum of 40 Core Units from – (the equivalent of a completed two-year degree/certificate) accredited interior design program; 
  2. Four years of diversified interior design experience;
  3. Provide evidence of passage of IDEX California®, the required exam.  

Category D

  1. Have at least eight years of interior design education, or at least eight years of diversified interior design experience, or a combination of interior design education and diversified interior design experience that together total at least eight years.
  2. Provide evidence of passage of IDEX California®, the required exam.
